He has emerged as one of the most melodious singers of Bollywood and has delivered numerous hits, like ‘Musafir’ Fitoor ‘Sajna’ Fitoor ‘Challeya’ Fitoor; ‘Ye Dooriyan’ Love Aaj Kal; ‘Kuchh Khaas’ Fashion; ‘Fitoor Fitoor Masakali’ Delhi 6; ‘Yaad Teri Aaye’ Ugly Aur Pagli; ‘Pehli Baar Mohabbat’ Kaminey; ‘Tum Se Hi’ Jab We Met and ‘Is Jahaan Mein’ Tum Mile. His voice is as tranquil as water flowing from some dark waterfall, his rhythm is as melodious as sparrow, his tone is as pure as dew drops, Mohit Chauhan is nature’s gift to the world of music.
Born and raised in the modest district of Himachal Pradesh- Bilaspur, Naham Sirmaur to parents Krishana Rana and B. K. Rana, he led a very quiet and protected childhood. Fluent in Hindi and his native language Bihari and Pahari, Mohit loves the tradition and customs of his hometown. After doing his early schooling from St.Xaviers, Delhi, Mohit moved back to his town in the Himachals to complete rest of his education. He did his graduation from his hometown Bilaspur and completed a masters degree of Science in Geology from Dharamshala. In his masters days he never thought of pursuing his career in singing.
Mohit never took any formal training in music or singing, though he always liked music and had a different taste for it. He loved to play guitar and sing with his friends. After completing his studies Mohit came down to Delhi to form a Band with his best friend Kem Trivedi. And together they formed Silk Route. Kem played the piano and helped him compose music. Silk Route was formed in the year 1996 and was a huge hit because of its landmark song Dooba Dooba Rehta Hoon, after which the band delivered two successful hits Boondein and Pehnchaan. After the band split, Mohit took a back seat in music and went into hiding from the industry. He only returned with a soulful number Guncha for the movie Main, Meri Patni Aur Woh. This song is considered as one of the best songs in Indian Cinema. Impressed by the power of his vocals, Mohit was asked to sing for Aamir Khan’s Rang De Basanti by one of the pioneers of music world, A.R.Rahman. Mohit shocked everybody with his brilliant talent. But he reached the heights of his success when he sang for Pritam in Imtiaz Ali’s Movie Jab We Met for the song Tum Se Hi, which went on to grab many awards for singing.
Mohit’s songs have made the singer one of the most popular singers in Bollywood. He has continued to deliver many chart buster hits for big budgeted hit movies like Once Upon A Time In Mumbai, Pee loon, Tanu Wed Man Yun Hi, Anjana Anjani Tujhe Bhula Diya, Bheegi Si Rajneeti and several songs for the block buster hit movie Rockstar ( 2011). Apart from Hindi movie songs, Mohit has also sung for Bengali movie Paglu and Tamil movie 3. He has learned to strike the right chord with the audience with his soulful voice which penetrates deep within the heart and soul.
Along with the movie songs of Mohit Chauhan, he has also sung jingles and title track for many successful advertisements, which has become very common. Mohit has collaborated with the who’s who of the advertisement industry by lending his sweet voice for the products like Alchemist & Maruti Suzuki Alto, Wheel (detergent), Nescafe, Hippo Munchies, Vicks Vapor Rub, Alpenlibe and Parachute. Leaving the movie songs and advertisements at a side Mohit has also sang for theme song of Star Pariwar and has judges two music reality show where he also had his own team called “Mohit’s Fighter”. Mohit was one of the star performers in the MTV music bonanza MTV Unplugged.
Mohit has won innumerable music awards over the years; the list is so long that one cannot fit it in a small article like this. He has managed to bag prestigious awards like Filmfare Awards, Zee Cine Awards, Mirchi Music Award, Star Screen Awards, IIFA Awards, Colors Screen Awards, BIG Star Entertainment Awards, and Apsara Film and Television Producers Guild Awards for being the best Play Back Singer of the year for the year 2010, 11 and 12. Mohit has delivered many exclusive albums for his fans and music lovers like Kalaam, which is a Poetry of Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam in the year 2008, and Maaya Maaya Re Sung by Indian Ocean and Mohit Chauhan. Both the albums went out to be great hits and won him accolades.
Mohit on personal front has a very calm and stable life. He is a man who stays away from controversies and gossips of the industry. He is a quite man when it comes to talking about his family and life. Mohit married Prathna Gehlot, last year on June 29th. His wife has a degree in Mass Comm and works for an English magazine. The couple got married in a very traditional way in Solan, Himachal Pradesh. His better half is very simple woman who hails from Dehradun, Uttarakhand.
