Dancing has been one of the most primitive kinds of art forms. People moving their body to a rhythmic music is what one may term as dancing. However, dancing is not everybody’s cup of tea. There are good dancers and bad dancers, but dancing is a form of expression and it must not be judged by terming it good or bad. Having said that, people who have exemplary dancing skills should carry forward their talent. They must hone their talent by practicing dancing every now and then. Only by continuous practice does one master the skill of dancing.
Dancers all over the world have received unparalleled adulation by their fans. Different dancers specialize in different dance forms. There are classical, folk, regional dances which add to India’s culture and heritage and along with that there are many modern dance forms like contemporary, jazz, ballet, hip hop, popping and locking, waltz, rumba, samba, acrobatics, gymnastic, aerial, etc. It’s very difficult to specialize in all dance forms so different dancers choose dance forms which they are comfortable in performing. Excellence in dancing comes with tedious practice sessions and a lot of training. Only then can one become a pro in this field.
Since dancing is involved with the glamour industry, it has it own sets of perks and not to mention the whopping pay scale. But everyone cannot make it big in this industry; it takes years of toil, experience, hard work and immense talent to become a famous name in the dance world. All Bollywood films have songs and where there is song, there is dance. So who conducts these dances and presents them to the audience? Here is where the dance director or choreographers come to play.
Bollywood is home to several choreographers who present film songs beautifully. From item numbers to love songs, all are directed by the talented dance directors. Many even judge and host popular dance television shows. Choreographers today are hogging the limelight by being a part of dance reality shows which to showcase the talent of budding dancers. Dance reality shows are a platform through which aspiring dancers and choreographers find a way to display their dancing skills. In order to judge these contestants a panel of big names in the dance industry is bought in, the judges also mentor and evaluate the young guns’ skills.
Indian choreographers are no less talented than Hollywood dance directors. In fact, Indian choreographers are very skilled even when it comes to international dance forms. Many Indian dancers are choosing international dance forms and specializing in them, this is helping in broadening their spectrum of knowledge about foreign dance forms and creating awareness about them. Indian dancers are so versatile that they excel in both Indian and international dance forms.
Many dance school have been created so that more and more people can explore their dancing proficiency, these dance schools are dedicated to create as many dancing stars as possible. Many Bollywood stars train under these dancing schools to enhance their dancing capabilities which further helps in their career.
One of the most prominent choreographers of Bollywood is Terence Lewis. The dancer was born and brought up in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Born in a catholic family to Xavier Lewis and Teresa Lewis, Terence has always been a blessing to his parents. He has eight siblings and is the youngest among them. He does not like to publicize his personal life so nobody really knows much about it. Terence had a knack for dancing since childhood. His birth date is 10th April 1975.
Terence is a phenomenal dancer and has trained in Ballet, Jazz and Contemporary dance in Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre. Terence later flew to New York to complete his dance training at Martha Graham Centre of Contemporary Dance. All this training has molded Terence into an awesome dancer and mentor. Terence has choreographed songs in movies like Jhankaar Beats (2003), Naach (2004), Aisha (2010), Isi Life Mein (2010), What’s Your Rashee (2009), and the iconic Lagaan (2001). The dance master also received the American Choreography Award for his contribution in Lagaan.
Terence has also choreographed a number of stage shows, advertisements, music videos and musical plays. The good looking dancer has also appeared in a few television commercials. Terence’s talent has crossed boundaries because he has choreographed shows abroad too. The man is the first ever Indian to receive the DanceWeb Europe scholarship, where he represented India, the felicitation was held in Vienna, Austria. Terence went on to represent Asia at the TANZ platform at the International Choreographers’ Meet which was held in Stuttgart, Germany. The 37 year old teaches Bollywood and Indian contemporary dance in Impulstanz Festival at Vienna, Austria, and has been doing so since 2007. This is a great achievement for the Mumbai lad.
Terence has also judged a number of popular dance reality shows. He judged Dance India Dance season 1 and 2. Terence has been loved by the contestants and audience alike in his “Terence sir” avatar. Terence has also judged dance Nach Baliye 5 with co-judges Shilpa Shetty Kundhra and Sajid Khan. He also mentored in Hindustaan Ke Hunarbaaz alongside Sonali Bendre.
Those who think Terence is just a good dancer will be surprised to know that he is quite a daredevil too. He performed many a stunt in the Indian version of Fear Factor. He was a very strong contender in Khatron ke Khiladi season 3; it was unfortunate that he was eliminated in the 11th episode of the show. Terence also has a Guinness world record to his name, he choreographed 1336 people together in a song, and it is the highest number of people being choreographed on a single stage.
Terence, though like most celebrities tries to keep his personal life low profile. He once declared on Dance India Dance that he is single and ready to mingle. Most of his female fans were overjoyed on hearing this news. All the very best Terence. We hope you dance the night away!
