Born on 18th January, 1975, as the daughter of Dr. Prem Kumar Bedi and Shakuntala Bedi of Chabbewal village of Hoshiarpur, Punjab, the much talked about Monica Bedi was brought up in Norway.
When on a two month holiday to India, Monica had joined Gopi Kishan’s classes to master the dance form of Kathak as she was interested in learning Indian Classical dance. She was still a student of English literature at Oxford when she came across Manoj Kumar, the famous producer cum director in the year 1995, after which she kick started her career in movies. She finished her edification of acting from Delhi University.
The hot Monica Bedi who drew the attention of Muppalaneni Shiva in a video album, obtained her first break in Tollywood from the producer D. Ramanaidu, who apart from casting her in the film Taj Mahal in the year 1995, also cast her in another film called Sivayya opposite Dr. Rajasekhar. Produced by T V D Prasad, she also featured in his directorial venture Speed Dancer but that was after she debuted in Bollywood in Raju Mavani’s movie Suraksha which starred Saif Ali Khan and Sunil Shetty. Her debut Bollywood venture helped her attain some fame in the industry.
Monica Bedi is famous for her roles in movies like Jodi No. 1 along with Sanjay Dutt and Govinda, Jaanam Samjha Karo, Tirchi Topi Wale with Inder Kumar and Chunky Pandey and Pyaar Ishq aur Mohabbat with Arjun Rampal, Sunil Shetty and Aftab Shivdasani. Besides Taj Mahal and Sivayya, she has also acted in various other Telugu and Kannada movies like Sogaddi Pellam (Telugu) opposite Mohan Bau, Agneepath (Telugu) opposite Chiranjeevi and Nannaseya Hoove (Kannada) opposite Navarasa Nayaka Jaggesh. She was also seen in movies like Devdasi (Tamil), Parichya (Nepali) and Gurpreet Singh Siddhu’s Sirphire (Punjabi) opposite Priyangshu Chatterjee for which she won the PTC award in the category of ‘Best Debut’.
Rumours have clung on to Monica Bedi and consequently scandals have also raised their ugly head to mar the name and reputation of this pretty damsel. However, with her excellent acting skills, which have been at times compared to that of Rekha, has allowed Monica Bedi to fill her kitty up to the brim as well as shut up all the rumour mongers.
In spite of all the success she has attained in her acting career, she was never thought of as an illustrious actor. She was noticed by many only after the revelation of her relationship with the gangster, Abu Salem. In an interview to the ShowTime magazine, she illustrated how she happened to cross roads with the gangster. In her words, Abu Salem had called her as a show organizer from Dubai. There evolved friendship between the two and on Monica’s first two trips to Dubai, he introduced himself as Arsalan Ali, his very frequently used fake identity, the one with which he was arrested in Portugal. But on her third trip to Dubai, the hot Monica Bedi had filled a special position in his heart and vice versa, Abu Salem revealed his true identity to her and expressed his desire to start all over again. Being aware of Abu Salem’s past, she agreed to begin anew and the couple relocated to the United States where the gangster tried his best to start coordinating shows honestly. But his sinful past got back to him. Monica admits that it was not that she didn’t want to end it. She tried to explain the differences in their backgrounds and talk the gangster out of the relationship but he was not convinced. Monica kept her relationship away even from her parents living in Norway, who were taken aback at her arrest and imprisonment for five years. The actress claims to have become stronger post her life in prison.
When she returned after her imprisonment, the strong lady put all this behind her and took up residence in Mulund. As a woman in her mid 30’s, Monica boldly faced all adversities and tried to carry out her normal life.
On 17th August, 2008, the hot Monica Bedi was seen as one of the thirteen contestants in the second season of the Indian version of the reality show Big Brother, Big Boss. As the show progressed, she became one of the most talked about participant because of her closeness to Rahul Mahajan, another contestant on the show. She was next seen on Jhalak Dikhla Ja Season 3, the show which Monica beholds as the new dawn in her career, along with choreographer Javed Sanadi. Although she was eliminated in the ninth episode of the season, the judges praised her improvement on the show. She was seen as a participant on NDTV Imagine’s reality show, Dil Jeetegi Desi Girl. In spite of being the favorite of the panchayat and the villagers, Monica was the sixth to get eliminated as the others on the show disapproved of her stay. Currently, the hot Monica Bedi will be seen in the role of a vamp in Sanja Leela Bhansali’s directorial debut on the small screen, Saraswatichandra, based on a Gujrati novel by Govardhanram Madhavaram Tripathi. She also has her eyes on a role in the next venture of Sajid Nadiadwala.
