Barun Sobti, born on the 21st of the eighth month of the year 1984, hails from a Punjabi Sikh family in Delhi. The graduate from Delhi had also completed his schooling from Meera Bagh and no, he is not one of those clichéd actors who claim to have been associated with acting from a young age. In fact he served the telecom company, Jindal as an operations manager for seven long years.
Barun Sobti’s first co star was Neha Junpundit, opposite whom he played the role of Swayam Khurana on Star Plus’ Shraddha, which was his debut venture. According to sources, Balaji had approached the then new actor for the lead role in Keshav Pandit. Sarwar Ahuja played the role instead of Sobti and this proves to us that the heartthrob is not all about good looks. He has the guts to turn down a big production house like Balaji Telefilms after acting in just one show. However, before he took up the lead role of Shravan Jaiswal on Sony TV’s Baat Hamari Pakki Hain, we also saw a flash of him in the negative role of Dr. Yuvraaj Singh in Star One’s Dill Mill Gayye which he eventually quit. He was also seen in Boogie Woogie, the immensely popular reality dance show promoting Baat Hamari Pakki Hain with co actor Ankita Sharma. The next character that Sobti played was that of a business tycoon, Amav Singh Raizada on Star Plus’ Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon. The character was that of a male protagonist who is dispassionate, rude and does not believe in love until he comes across his true love, Khushi Kumari a.k.a. Sanaya Irani. The show, which is extremely popular, is a hot favorite among the audiences and depicts the duo sharing a love hate relationship. Sobti drew a lot of attention with his effortless acting and the sizzling on screen chemistry that he shared with co actor Sanaya Irani and it brought him unequaled fame and astounding success. His performance on the show won him various awards, esteem among the critics and made him a household name. But, as I mentioned earlier, Barun Sobti is a man of guts and follows his heart rather than the money trail. This was proved once again when he quit from the show due to personal reasons and the consequences that followed were record breaking. The show which first went on air in 6th June, 2011, shut down suddenly on 30th November, 2012. The producers and the channel publicly and quite disputably stated that the reason behind the show signing off was Barun Sobti’s sudden exit. Well, Sobti must have been really unique that the producers could not find a replacement and preferred shutting down the show instead!
Often accredited as ‘The Golden Boy of Indian Television’, Barun Sobti has been seen performing at the Star Parivar Live Event, 2012 in Birmingham, UK and also hosting the Star Parivar Awards, 2011. He has been interviewed by Noreen Khan from the BBC in March, 2012.
Sobti has finished shooting for his debut Bollywood film Main Aur Mr. Riight which is due to release in June, 2013. He has also landed himself a role in another movie which will be directed by Mitali Ghoshal, named 22 Yards; this revolves around the conspiracies of the cricket world.
Barun is the only television actor with four Star Parivar Awards in the categories of ‘The Most Stylish Sadasya (male)’, ‘The Favourite Naya Sadasya (male)’, ‘The Favourite International Jodi’ (with Sanaya Irani) and ‘Favourite On-screen Jodi’ (shared with Sanaya Irani) for his role in Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon. He has also won the Indian Television Academy Award in the best popular actor category for the same. Sobti also won the award for the ‘Best Actor’ and the ‘Favourite on-screen Jodi’ (with Sanaya Irani) at the People’s Choice Awards, India and the ‘Best On-screen Couple’ with Sanaya Irani at the Indian Telly Awards. He was also nominated for the ‘Best On Screen Couple’ and ‘Best Tv Personality’ at the Zee Gold Awards for Iss Pyaar Koh Kya Naam Doon, in the ‘Best TV Actor Category’ for his role in the show Baat Hamari Pakki Hain at the Apsara Awards and in the category of ‘Big Star Super Entertainer’ for his role in Baat Hamari Pakki Hain at the Big Star Young Entertainer Awards.
The five feet eleven inches man married Pasmeena Manchanda, his childhood love, on 12th December, 2010 very privately in a Gurudwara. According to the sources he had taken only a day off from his shooting as he kept the ceremony very short.
Going by his course of decisions and actions, Barun Sobti is here in the television industry to stay. We see this handsome actor making it big in Bollywood and wish him all the very best.
